The Opus Group® announced the completion of The Helmsman, a five-story, boutique-style luxury apartment community in downtown Savannah near Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD).
The Helmsman borders Savannah’s historic district and is within walking distance to many of SCAD’s facilities, as well as most things that residents need including shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, bars and entertainment venues.
“The Helmsman helps address a particular demand for student living in Savannah and offers amenity-rich living to other residents who desire modern rental living,” said Ben Angelo, senior vice president of real estate development at Opus. “It is bringing new life to a site that was previously highly underutilized, serving as a catalyst for continued re-development of the area.”
Residents can choose from studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, three-bedroom and four-bedroom apartments, all with private bathrooms for each bedroom. They feature contemporary finishes, including quartz countertops, wood-style plank flooring, stainless-steel appliances and in-unit laundry. All units are fully furnished. Select units have balconies.
Residents and their guests enjoy many amenities including an art studio, private and group study areas, a resident lounge, a clubroom, a spa with sauna and relaxation room, a fitness center, an outdoor pool, an outdoor dining area with grills, an outdoor entertainment area, indoor secure bike storage and a bike maintenance room. There is also onsite covered parking.
The project is a joint venture between Opus and Atlantic American Partners. Huntington Bank is the lender.
“We are pleased to be partnering with Opus on this important addition to Savannah,” said Brad Snyder, partner of Atlantic American Partners. “The Helmsman is in a prime location near the college, where demand for student living has outpaced supply for some time.”
A small number of apartment homes remain available for immediate move-in and leasing for the 2024-2025 academic year is underway.
Opus was the developer. The project team included Myefski Architects as the architect of record, Rabren General Contractors, Thomas & Hutton as the civil engineer, LBYD as the structural engineer and Creative License International as the interior designer.
