R.D. Olson Construction, an award-winning general contracting firm in California, has announced completion of the $42.5M West Carson Villas, their first project for client PATH Ventures, a nonprofit affordable housing developer and service provider.
PATH will be owners and operators of the 111-unit supportive housing community designated for residents earning between 30 and 60 percent of the area median income (AMI). Construction of West Carson Villas began in November of 2021 with some delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As a Gold LEED certified property, many of the details incorporated into the four-story building aim for environmental sustainability, including rooftop solar panels, energy-saving appliances, and a hot water recirculation system. West Carson Villas is located at 22801-22905 S. Vermont Avenue and was designed by KFA Architecture to feature pitched rooflines and an exterior of metal facing the main street.
“We really rose to the occasion on West Carson Villas, based on the extensive work required at that specific location,” said Bill Wilhelm, President of R.D. Olson Construction. “Our team was tasked with blanketing a 51-inch water main that ran through the site, requiring caisson steel beams 60 feet deep and 12 feet tall. This massive undertaking was a showcase of our skills and experience in foundation work.”
Previous R.D. Olson affordable housing construction projects include Las Flores Apartments in Santa Monica, Rose Hills Courts in Los Angeles, Stony Oaks Apartments in Santa Rosa, and West Terrace in Hyde Park. They are also currently working on other affordable housing communities including Kettner Crossing in San Diego, and Emporia Housing in Ontario.
