Hawai’i’s first affordable senior rental community for veterans, Hale Nā Koa ‘O Hanakahi, celebrated its grand opening with a traditional Hawaiian blessing and dedication ceremony, Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Hale Nā Koa ‘O Hanakahi, loosely translated as “House of the Warrior,” honors both Hilo’s beloved ancient chief Hanakahi, known for bringing peace and prosperity, and the modern warriors who have served our country.
Developed by nonprofit affordable housing organization EAH Housing, in collaboration with the Hawai’i Island Veterans Memorial, Inc., the $58 million project transformed a 5.6-acre parcel into a community designed to provide security, dignity, and connection for kūpuna earning up to 80% of the area median income.
“We are proud to offer these new residences for kūpuna on Hawai’i Island,” said Karen Seddon, regional vice president at EAH Housing. “This project is a result of the collaboration and support from Hawai’i County, the state, and our partners, and reflects our ongoing commitment to creating affordable housing opportunities across the islands.”
The new community consists of three 24-unit two-story buildings and one 20-unit two-story building. Each one-bedroom unit is around 546 square feet.
Residents of Hale Nā Koa ‘O Hanakahi have access to many amenities, including a community center with a common area lounge, coffee bar, and fitness room. The center also features a multi-purpose room and a non-commercial kitchen for residents to enjoy social and educational activities together. In addition, there will be an on-site resident manager, property management offices, and four laundry facilities.
“Every new affordable unit makes a difference, especially for kūpuna on the neighbor islands,” said Governor Josh Green. “This community ensures residents can age with dignity and peace of mind, while families know their loved ones are well cared for and safe.”
“We are indebted to our veterans,” said Hawai’i County Mayor Kimo Alameda. “Their courage and sacrifice touch us all, and we are proud to support this critical affordable housing community.”
Denise Nakanishi, chairperson of the board for the Hawai’i Island Veterans Memorial, Inc., noted that this is only the beginning.
“This community is the first phase of a larger master-planned campus,” she said. “Future plans include a veterans’ center and an outpatient clinic to expand healthcare access and support services for veterans and their families.”
Design Partners Inc. was the architect for Hale Nā Koa ‘O Hanakahi, and Maryl Construction Group was the general contractor. Financing was provided by a variety of sources, including the County of Hawai’i’s Office of Housing and Community Development. EAH Housing Real Estate Management will oversee general operations and maintenance of the property.
Additional public support came via a long-term ground lease of the State of Hawaiʻi-owned land under Executive Order to the County of Hawaiʻi.
