EAH Housing, in collaboration with the Veterans Transition Center (VTC) of California, is proud to announce the groundbreaking of Lightfighter Village, a visionary housing development designed to provide permanent rental housing for veterans, with a specific focus on addressing the needs of homeless veterans. Situated on the former Fort Ord Base, VTC acquired ownership of the land through a quitclaim deed from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
“Americans who served our country should never have to experience homelessness due to a lack of affordable housing and support services,” said US Representative Jimmy Panetta. “Far beyond a typical housing development, Lightfighter Village provides hope for homeless veterans, offering them a secure, nurturing, and safe haven in which they can begin rebuilding their lives and receive the support necessary to thrive. Lightfighter Village embodies the shared commitment of our community to honor and care for those who have made immense sacrifices in service to our nation, and I am proud to see it take shape through local, state, and federal support.”
“In joining forces with the VTC on this project, we are honored and deeply inspired by our mutual goal to provide affordable housing and essential support services,” said Laura Hall, President and CEO of EAH Housing. “Lightfighter Village will be a living testament to the indomitable spirit and resilience of our shared mission, thoughtfully crafted to meet the distinct needs of our veterans and individuals who have experienced the challenges of homelessness.”
Lightfighter Village will provide affordable housing to residents earning 30%-50% of the area median income (AMI). It offers a total of 71 residential units in various sizes, including 64 studios and seven two-bedroom units, making it an inclusive housing community suitable for both families and veterans.
Each unit features energy-efficient appliances, window coverings, and walk-in closets. The community amenities include a community room, garden, bicycle parking, on-site laundry, on-site parking, a management office, and resident lounges to foster a vibrant and supportive living environment.
“Lightfighter Village represents a turning point, where our veterans can find a secure and supportive place to reclaim their lives and build brighter futures,” said Kurt Schake, Executive Director of the Veterans Transition Center. “Our partnership with EAH Housing is more than a collaborative effort; it’s a testament to our commitment to ensuring that veterans and those facing homelessness have access to not just housing but a revitalized sense of purpose.”
Lightfighter Village is pursuing GreenPoint Gold certification, showcasing a strong dedication to sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. Project financing for Lightfighter Village will involve multiple sources, and ensure that financial resources can be directed toward essential veteran and homeless services.
